Not fun! I would say that is what we call a bull snake. It looks like a rattle snake (see the diamond pattern) but has no rattles on his tail. I can't see the tail but hoped you checked it for rattles. They even make a rattle sound. It's almost certain that if you have one there's a good chance there are more. Not to worry though they are actually wonderful to keep down mice and rodents. Could also be a gopher snake, they are similar. Either way they are safe to have around. Just scary.
